It had been a long day of rock climbing on the sheer granite dome of Mt. Watkins in Tenaya Canyon. My friend Tom Addison was attempting the first free ascent of a route called "Escape from Freedom," and I was on belay duty, playing out slack as he worked out the intricate moves. Lightning had threatened us for a couple hours but it didn't rain. While hiking back to the car the sky turned an odd vanilla color and I stopped to make this image.
