"Sky Petroglyphs" and Sierra Sunrise
Bishop,
California
© 2006 Jerry Dodrill
It was sixteen degrees and windy when
I left the car, hiking up half an hour in pre-dawn light
to catch the High Sierra Sunrise behind these amazing petroglyphs.
The light had begun, and I was sweating. I pulled off my
down jacket but in thirty seconds was freezing, so put it
back on. I tried to imagine the Native Americans who made
these symbols long ago. How did they keep warm? How did
they survive in this harsh environment of extreme heat and
cold? I pulled the hat over my ears and tried to keep my
heat from fogging the camera while being careful not to
step on the ancient art.
