Calla Lilies at Duncans Landing, Sonoma Coast, California

Calla
Lilies have long been a favorite subject of artists. Their
pure whiteness a symbol of purity. Their sensuous form the
essence of grace. I generally avoid such iconic images,
preferring personal discoveries over repeating ideas which
others have rendered so well, but rules are meant to be
broken. When I saw these flowers, blooming on a steep coastal
hillside, I decided to try my luck. Selecting a wide lens,
I looked down on them from a traditional landscape perspective
with ocean behind. Visually, it just wasn't right. I was
perplexed by the harsh contrast and difficult composition.
Squatting low on the muddy hillside, I peered out through
the stems, looking for a more creative view. This "screen"
was just the effect I desired and gives the sense of being
perched on a lovely sea side bluff, enjoying the morning.
