The Tufoni formations along Salt Point State Park's sandstone bluffs are a unique wonderland. Often refered to as a moonscape, these stones are etched through a process that is not entirely understood. Salt crystals are thought to interact with the rock, which is etched by driving wind and water. Pomo Indians filled the natural pans with sea water to evaporate out the salt for cooking and treating animal hides.

Hikers can enjoy six miles of this odd coast line in Salt Point State Park and hike over 20 miles of trails through dense forests of pine, redwood, madrone, oak and fir. The diving here is amazing, despite the cold water.

Here, photography is best done with a tripod just after sunset when the contrast is low but light is rich.
