Sunrise at School House Beach, Sonoma Coast, California

Outdoor
photography often requires a flexible plan. The morning
I made this image I was intent on walking into a dark redwood
grove to photograph tiny Calypso Orchids. The light had
a different agenda however. As I drove the coastal highway,
rays of light gently bottom-lit the high thin clouds. Land
and sea were illuminated in a coat of red. Deciding to change
course, I pulled into School House beach. I had long been
intrigued by the distinct stones which guard the steep bluff,
but had not yet had the opportunity to work with them in
good light. That morning everything came together. Spring
flowers were blooming on the cliff's edge and made an appropriate
foreground for this beautiful landscape. This image quickly
became a favorite in our exhibitions and is destined to
become a classic.
