Fenceline Sunset, Fort Ross, California

The
weather forecast for my 2002 November workshop was for rain.
We went out anyway, hoping for light and were hit by a torrential
squall. Soaked to the bone, we went to brunch at Salt Point
Lodge. Once we were fed and warmed up, we worked along the
coast before heading to Fort Ross for Sunset. The storm
was clearing and the light was ideal. The grasses were wet
and rich and the high clouds were illuminated from below.
Roy Crockett was working along this fence when I stepped
beside him, took a meter reading and, like a sniper, took
one shot before moving on. Luckily one did the job. The
flow of grasses in the foreground is indicative of the constant
winds which shape and form western Sonoma County's landscape
while the fence tells the story of a passing era.
